Dozens Get Arrested in Manhattan After Staging Anti-ICE Hotel Sit-In
More than 100 demonstrators gathered inside the Hilton Garden Inn on Sixth Avenue near Canal Street, chanting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with anti-ICE slogans. The protesters also criticized Hilton, alleging the hotel was providing accommodations to ICE personnel.
Hotel staff and guests were reportedly confused by the demonstration, and it was unclear whether any ICE agents were staying at the hotel. Police entered the lobby and warned those inside that refusal to leave would result in arrest. Many protesters exited, while about 50 remained.
Officers from the New York Police Department’s Strategic Response Group then moved in to detain the remaining protesters. Authorities confirmed there were “multiple” arrests but did not immediately release the exact number or the charges.
The protest in Manhattan followed similar demonstrations in Minneapolis after the deaths of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a mother of three, and Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an ICU nurse, who were fatally shot in separate incidents involving ICE agents earlier this month. The Department of Homeland Security said both individuals posed threats to agents, a claim disputed by politicians, journalists, and civil rights groups citing video evidence from the scenes.
These back-to-back deaths have prompted nationwide protests, with demonstrators calling for transparency, accountability, and independent investigations into federal immigration enforcement actions.
